How can I monetarily maximize my mini-sessions?
Oh! There are so many ways you can make money from mini-session if you do it right.
#1 Don’t give away the farm
Seriously. Mini is MINI for a reason. Mini should be in pricing, consultation, shooting time, and products included. You should not have a mini-session that is the same as a typical session length, price, and products included….that defeats the purpose.
Consider this, it’s like an appetizer to warm up your clients to you and photography. This gives them a taste, and hopefully wanting for more!
#2 One location. One date. One time.
If you are cobbling together multiple dates at your clients request, you’re losing money and time. Pick a few days with pre-selected times, and clients can only choose from there. Remember, this is a MINI. You need to be expending less time on this than you would a typical session – including your administrative and driving time. If you try to appease everyone and are driving all over town on separate dates (without booking clients back to back), you’re wasting a lot of overhead time and money. Maybe we should get to calling it a mini-session marathon – not just mini sessions. We really don’t believe they should be one-off sessions. That’s what full pricing is for. Exceptions do happen though!
#3 Utilize email marketing and make an up-sell
One of the biggest topics for marketing that we discuss in Insider Membership is the use of email marketing as a cheap and easy way to get people who have already inquired and/or photographed with you to keep coming back. Convert these clients from mini to full.
Let me explain what this can look like:
Take look at when clients typically come around. That is probably NOT going to be when you’re going to do a mini. If you’re a family photographer, you probably notice that a majority of clients want photographs near fall in preparation for Christmas! This is probably NOT the time to offer a full-family type session for mini. Either provide a mini-session that is capped for just the children, OR don’t offer a mini-session in this time period at all. Our suggestion would be to do a mini-session in the spring/beginning of summer and then up-sell this client into a full family session in the fall!
